Driving at Night is More Dangerous Than You Think

After the summer months, the days get shorter and it is darker longer. However, with school starting, you might need to pick up the kids from practice or other activities in the evening and spend time driving after the sun goes down.

You might not realize it, but driving after dark is in fact more dangerous than driving during daylight for a few reasons. It is important to take extra precautions when on the roads when it is dark out so as to keep you and your family safe.

Vision Impairment

Obviously, driving in the dark presents significant vision impairment problems. In the dark, most car’s visibility is limited to about 250 feet which means less time to anticipate oncoming dangers on the road.

Older drivers also can have more difficulty seeing in low light. Even drivers as young as 30-years-old can have problems seeing at night. If you personally do not have vision problems, other drivers might experience these problems, which can create more dangers for others on the road.

Drowsy Driving

Another significant issue with driving at night is the chance that tired drivers may be on the road. As it gets later, the risk that people who are drowsy are driving can increase.

Drowsy driving has caused over 100,000 car accidents according to the National Highway Transit Safety Administration. Even losing just two hours of sleep can have the same effect as drinking three servings of alcohol and can make a person three times more likely to get into a car accident.

As the nights get longer, the chances of being involved in a car accident might increase. Staying vigilant and cautious can help increase safety and decrease the risks that come with driving after dark.
